GH5 auto focus hack works! Now, about conforming 29.976 to 24p in Resolve. Possible?
As the title suggests, I tried the autofocus “hack” which fixes the GH5’s horrible autofocus problem. The only thing is you have to shoot in 30p (29.976) or 60p. It doesn’t work in 23.blah or proper 24p. I only intend to use it when I’m shooting myself, but that’s most of the time. So I was wondering if Resolve 14.3 has any built in tools to conform 29.976 (30p) to 24p, or even 23.976? Or is there a method? I created a new project and dropped the file in and adjusted some settings (Resolve always seems to default to 1080p), but in the deliver page my only render option is 29.976p.
HELP!!! No rush, actually. This ain’t life and death. I’m actually going to lunch now. 😉

The problem with conforming 30p to 24p or 29.97 to 23.976 is the 6 extra frames per second that need to be dealt with. The only way to deal with them without slowing down the video (which would be useless) is to use blended frames. Problem with blended frames is that a great looking video ends up looking really crappy.
So in a nutshell there really is no good way to go from 30 to 24.

Thanks, Brent. I did notice that, for some reason, V Log footage shot at 29.976 and 8 bit is a lot easier to color correct, for some reason. It looks kind of video-y, which I hate, but it also looks more true to life color wise. Now I’m really torn. I guess if I ever put together an honest to goodness film short, I’ll shoot C4K. In the meantime, doing my usual one man band thing, the NTSC 30p 8 bit route is the way to go.
Thanks for at least confirming that there’s no point in trying to conform 30p to 24p.

Maybe you just have to wait for a 24p auto focus firmware update from Panasonic !

Yeah, actually 30p is growing on me for now. Even 8 bit. I’ll use this when doing my one man show, and C4K 24p when I shoot the great American film classic (which will probably be never if I don’t start making connections!)

UPDATE: I’ve since discovered that the focus fix even works on 10 bit ALL-I 400mbps files, as long as it’s in 30p, which practically brings me to the edge of C4K. I can easily live with this in the meantime.

24 fps was choosen as a framerate that was a comprimise between smooth motion and low cost.
(Higher framerates costed more film, which was highly expensive.)
Now, that is no longer valid.
Any ‘classic’ director would have choosen a higher framerate if given the opportunity.Nowadays, you pick the framerate you get away with for delivery.
25i if you go to European (and some other) countries broadcast, or 50P if you intend to do a lot of slomo.
29.97i for US (or, double it again and shoot P for slomo)23.976p if you want to go broadcast in both Europe and US.
If you also go to the cinema, shoot P.
Otherwise, 29.97, 30, 59,94 or 60. Probably P (Unless you know the target display is interlaced capable.)
Theatre nowadays eats any framerate, but needs to be progressive.
