I just stumbled here, and I gratefully thank all for this info. You’re saving my life tonight on an old FCP system…

I would like to second (or third) the opinion on this. This is a rare issue, thus folks may come upon this every couple of years. It just saved my life – or at least several $100 dollars I woulda lost along with a client. …and the post is over two years old now.

Downside to the solution, is it seems this codec will not install without the Quicktime bloat/spyware. Anyone know of an alternative codec for AppleProResDecoder.qtx that doesn’t require the evil of Quicktime?

Seems Quicktime Alt does not yet support this format.

I can’t try it right now but it seams that you can download a package of codecs for Pro Apps directly on apple’s website.

    About ProApps QuickTime Codecs
This update adds the following video codecs for use by QuickTime-based applications:

    Apple Intermediate Codec
    Apple ProRes
    AVC-Intra
    DVCPRO HD
    HDV
    XDCAM HD / EX / HD422
    MPEG IMX
    Uncompressed 4:2:2
This update is recommended for all users of Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, or Compressor 4.

    Here’s the link : https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1396

Can somebody try it and say if it’s working ?

Keeping open this two years old thread makes no sense.
If there is any interesting thing to post, please open a new one.

I’ve tested the codec pack i was talking about earlier. Tried to install it on a FCP 6. Got an error msg : it’s only working on FCP X…. 🙁

I followed these instructions (except I only copied over prores, not all codecs) and I see the prores codec in MPEG streamclip. However, when I attempt to export a quick time file in the prores format, I get an error message – Error: can’t open the compressor.

I have an older system and software: MAC OS X version 10.5.8, PowerPC, FCP 5.1.4

    Any suggestions?

    thanks.

This didn’t work for me. I keep getting the “codec not found” error message. I’m on OS 10.5.8, FCP 6.0.6.

Is it possible I’m putting the .component files in the wrong folder? I put them in, library>quicktime, and when that didn’t work I tried putting them in system>library>quicktime.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks

My 2 cents, since Ken Evans post of Oct 7, 2011 just saved me (a) a client, (b) a bundle, (c) a load of grief.

Absolutely nothing wrong with keeping old posts alive with new developments and info which address lingering issues. And many thanks to anyone (listening, Ken?) who takes the time. When in the throes of confusion and searching madly for answers, we don’t care if it comes from an old post or new.

Ken’s easy solution worked like a charm, and I’m now rendering Apple ProRes 4444 with alpha channels out of After Effects, just as a particular client has requested – way to go! (and excellent to not have to purchase FCP X just to get some codecs)

In answer to a couple posts by folks who had problems getting it to work in FCP, I believe it’s because the current QT package needs FCP 7 or above – 6 and below won’t read some of them (I’ve just gotten this impression from some earlier reading while doing a search). Works great out of Premier though (nudge, nudge – since Apple is clearly giving up on their professional software offerings).
