Getting Started – How much should I charge?
I have been doing corporate video for my company for several years and have recently decided to do some other video work on the side. I have been approached by an auto repair shop to do a webite video for their shop. It would include general information with shots of the shop, staff and a couple of testimonials. I would also provide the voice over. Their focus is stricly on a video for their website and they do not want to run the video on cable TV due to the expense. The owner of the shop is asking what it will cost. Can anyone give me some idea of what I should quote for a price?
Any help would be much appreciated.

How many days shooting?
How many days editing/grading/post?
How many staff will you need to do the job and what are their rates?
What are your costs as a business?
What equipment do you have/what will need hiring?
Where do you have to travel?
What are the final deliverables?
What margin to you want to make?
There are more questions, but answering these should give you a good idea.

Exactly what Tom said. You charge what you are worth. Even is it’s side work you are still working and therefor should be thinking business. There is no straight forward answer because every situation and circumstance is different.

Thank you both for some really good input. I know a lot of times we sell ourselves short because we want the job and our passion for doing this type of work sometimes clouds our better judgement. This usually results in us underselling ourselves and when we are putting in the long hours for the small payoff we regret it.
What I have done with your input is assess all the aspects of what is needed and the time it would take to complete it. Once I had a total time and effort, I started playing with numbers, dividing what I would charge by the amount of hours and got an hourly rate. I now can assess whether or not my time is worth what I will charge.
