  • getting rid of black edges in HDV footage upressed from SD

I had a bunch of SD footage upressed to HDV 1080i60

The original SD footage had the notorious black lines along the right and left edge (4-5 pixels thick) – which now also appears along both side edges of the upressed HDV footage.

What is my best option to get rid of it? I know it would be unwise to scale the image above 100% – so am thinking I will maintain the 1080 horizontal lines by keeping 100% scale and stretching the image slightly horizontally using the DISTORT values on the Motion tab in Final Cut instead.

Is this my best option for getting rid of these black edges and getting my picture to fill the frame? Your insights are very much appreciated. Thanks!

Why? It’s done all the time. As you say, your only other option is stretching, which is hardly a better option.

It’s already been scaled somewhere around 250% to fill the HD frame. Yeah, what’s another 1 or 2 percent?

If your going to upress SD footage there are MUCH MUCH better codecs to choose then HDV.

I recommend a HD size of prores, and then use a prores time line in FCP.
