  • Getting Quality Still Photos from HDV footage in Vegas

Posted by James Gagnon on September 16, 2009 at 7:11 pm

I recently recorded a wedding and the photographer just called in a panic. Apparently her memory card crashed and she lost the entire ceremony. She is hoping I can get some quality images from my footage. Every time I have tried this the quality is lacking.

I have Vegas Pro 8.0. What settings and process should I use to get a quality image from our HDV footage so that they can have some shots for their album?

Could someone please help with this???!!!!

Make sure your Project Properties (File – Properties) match your source footage.
Also in this tab, set the “Field Order” to None (progressive scan) as you’ll get less “jaggies” in your images this way.
Set your Preview window to Best/Full.
Place the cursor at the desired location and click the “Save Snapshot to File” icon (looks like a floppy disc).
Save it in PNG format (loseless) in case the photographer wants to modify it in any way, shape or form.
You should end up with images that are 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Set the project properties to progressive and the video preview to Best Full and then use the diskette icon above the preview window to save to disc as a PNG file. At 1920×1080, HD is only 2MP which is very low resolution compared to today’s 10MP cameras but at least it’s a memory of the day.

I had a similar experience at my wedding. 🙁 The photographer’s camera malfunctioned and she had no shots of the ceremony at the Church. What she did was ask us to have all of our friends and relatives who had cameras to please give us the negatives and she made high quality prints from their camera negatives. So that’s something else to try (luckily my brother-in-law Vince is pretty good with a camera and we used most of his shots). Lots of people use digital SLR’s these days.

If you set the preview to Preview Auto, it will take a snapshot at level of clarity?
