  • Getting more quality out of my video

Posted by Chad Miller on August 21, 2009 at 5:36 am

    Hi all,

I am a long time photographer but new to video and video editing. Although I am doing pretty well figuring out the ins and outs of FCP, I feel like I should be able to get higher quality video out of my projects.

I am shooting with a Canon XH-A1 in 1080i 24f, other than that all the settings are pretty much factory.

My project on FCP is HD format and using HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60

Any tips or settings changes I can make for my projects to be higher quality?

    Thanks so much!

    Chad

Why exactly are you using Apple Intermediate Codec? How did you decide to use that? AIC is a legacy codec, that was briefly used when FCP could not handle HDV in other ways. It’s certainly not the best codec.

What version of FCP are you using?

I have no idea haha. I am actually using final cut express 4.0 right now but will be getting FCP this coming week.

How are you monitoring the video?

Thats why you are using Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). FCE is extremely limited on the formats/codecs that it can use. AIC is the only HD codec that FCE can use.

Excellent move. Now you can start using ProRes which is a MUCH better editing codec.

Sure they’re aren’t technical solutions to artistic problems, but there are definitely settings to get the most out of your technology!

I purchased the newest version of FCS and I’ll probably be loading it either tonight or tomorrow when I have some time.

Very excited to see the difference.

Thanks for the responses guys I appreciate it. If you have any more technical tips for my setup let me know.

Chad that is the quote that I use as my signature.
