    Greetings,

I’m trying to take standard DV NTSC (720×480) and upconvert it to either 720p or 1080i/p. Currently I’m scaling each clip to 200%, and them re-centering the frame so that it looks the way I want in the new widescreen format. However, the video clip is blocky at best, a result of doubling the pixels.

I’m curious as to what any of you do to upconvert with minimal quality loss. What combination of filters, retail or free, do you use? I can use Shake if I need to, but I’ll need details on which effects to apply.

    Thanks,

    –Ryan

The best upconversion is done with hardware from Terranex, this is nearly required if the content is to be broadcast.
Hardware upconversion is the second best method- the Kona2 and Kona3 can ingest SD footage and output HD.
HD Decks like Panasonics 1200a allow you to put your DV tape in the machine and output to HD from the dv tape directly.

IMHO – Final Cut does less than average and the only plugin I would recommend for this is from Agolith

3 other things to look at:

Resizer from Digital Anarchy and Instant HD from Red giant, both require HUGE render times, and take a look at chroma sharpen from Nattress, in the Gfilm set.

BTW regarding the above-mentioned Terranex, I believe they now make a unit we all can actually afford to buy!

    Have a wonderful day.

they sure do the Mini unit is less than $6K (US)- considering that the price for this type of quality used to be over $600K.
