Getting best out of RORKE GALAXY HDX4….
Posted by Harcharan Singh on January 3, 2013 at 10:53 amHi,
We have a Rorke Galaxy HDX4 with 4 8GBp’s FC ports and One ISCI port…
We plan to build a RAID 5 with 16 2TB Seagate Enterprise edition drives.
How can be get the best throughput through the 8GBPS fibre channel ports.
Will it be safe to assign 4 partition to 4 FC channels and then stripe the drives through windows to get the best output.
We are using a Qlogic 2654 HBA card.
Please help.
Thanks

January 4, 2013 at 3:42 pmAre you using this RAID as direct attached storage to a single computer, or are you trying to build a SAN serving multiple clients?

January 6, 2013 at 8:00 pmI’ve never used this unit, and I’m not very familiar with Windows, so forgive me.
as DAS, you will get fastest access running the 16 drives at RAID-5. i would recommend RAID-6 however, so you get an additional drive of redundancy. Don’t do any partitioning. Use speed testing software such as Blackmagic Speed Test and experiment with different block sizes and stripe breadths until you get a speed combo that you like. this will require multiple reformats so don’t put any media on the unit until you finalize your block and stripe numbers. with HD video, typically the largest block size is desired.
When you switch to a SAN setup, you will likely have to reformat this RAID depending on the requirements of the SAN software you choose. for example, with Xsan, you will need to specify metadata drives within the 16 drive array (requiring a reformat).
sorry I can’t get more specific as i haven’t used this equipment or Windows in a SAN environment.

As I have purchased the unit from ebay RORKE support has declined support…I do not know why…
I have got their manuals and trying to get it work at its fastest.
The unit is similar to Infortrend..

January 8, 2013 at 3:16 pmtell Rorke that you will PAY for support. No one does anything for free.
You tried to save money by purchasing a used drive array from ebay. Now, you must PAY Rorke
Data to help you. There is no reason that they should give you free support, if you did not purchase it from them.If you feel that this is unfair, and unprofessional, then I will read the manual for you, and help you with the setup FOR FREE, but in return, you must come to my house, and paint all the walls for free.

January 8, 2013 at 3:25 pmI saw your post the other day and I am sorry you if you feel you have not been supported. However please understand that you purchased your product on Ebay and so you are not the original purchaser and therefore do not have a support contract. We would be happy to help you get the system up and running and can offer you an annual support contract so you can have a great experience with our product.
Kind Regards
