    Hello all:

Okay, I’ve got some footage shot on the HVX200 at 24p over 60. I want to extract the 24p frames only, and create 23.98 QT files to cut with (to match with other HVX footage shot at 24pN). I’ve tried the FRC, and it doesn’t work (adds duplicate frames every 5 frames and changes the duration of the shot accordingly…). I’ve upgraded to 5.1.1 and checked off the ‘remove extra frames’ option in the P2 import box — it doesn’t work. I’ve tried Cinema Tools, nothing works there. At this point, the only other thing I can think of, is to cut the 59.94 footage, output to a Panny 1200a deck, and re-import at 23.98 with my Kona 2 set to discard the extra frames. Will this work? Any better suggestions?

    Any advice appreciated.

    Best, JIM.

    Jim,
no offense but you did something incorrect like choosing 29.97 instead of 23.98 for the frame rate.
the FRC cannot not add frames it can only remove them.

Make sure your 24/60 clip into the root level of the browser window
    select it in the browser
Go to “Tools” and select DVCPROHD Frame rate converter”
(if using 5.1 use only the FRC on your FCP installer disk)

CHECK all 3 boxes in the FRC
Name the new clip ( and put it some where you can find it) and process.

    Hi Gary:

Sorry to belabour this point, but I just can’t get this to work. I did select 23.98, put the original clip in the root of the project, re-loaded the FRC from the FCP install disk — even tried re-importing the original clip with the new 5.1.1 FCP software, but still no luck. When I jog through the footage, I see a still frame every 5th frame, and the duration of the clip is longer than the original (a 10:40 clip comes back in as 13:08).

This is a major issue for me, as I have a shoot where they shot a few days at 24p/60 before they switched to straight 24pN. How the heck am I to cut these two parts together?

I need real-world answers. If anyone has any, I’d gladly accept them.

    Best, JIM.

You can use Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown, but you’ll have to convert it to fields first, because Cinema Tools only understands fielded formats for reverse telecine operations. Take in the footage as 60 frames (“720p/24 in 60”). Use Final Cut to export these clips as 1080i/60. This will essentially make every frame into a field. Take the 1080i/60 clip and do a reverse telecine. This will generate a 1080p/24 clip. You can then rescale this back to 720 or use as is. Be aware that you might need to try a few different settings in the reverse telecine operation before you find the proper cadence.

then Jeremy’s assumption may be correct and this is not a original P2 capture. It has been reconverted inside of FCP and the flags have been not been included in that reconversion.
In that the FRC is is not starting on what should be a 0 or 5 frame but some other frame is the reason for the duped 6th frame (the 5+1 or (4:2) cadence is indicative of QT conversions)

    Hello all:

Thanks for the great info. Doing the DVCPRO HD export via Quicktime Conversion works. But what an inelegant way to have to go. The FRC may be fine for getting slo-mo out of 60p material, but it doesn’t work as it should for converting 24p/60 material to 24p. (I told them to test, but would they? The same old song…)

Thanks to all who helped me solve this issue. The COW rocks.
