Get fluid letter spacing and scaling text animation?
Hi, this is for a short film title, and what I want to do is to have several independent lines of text slowly move horizontally for the title.
I used keyframes on first and last image of text clips, and changed both position and letter spacing or scale between keyframes. Differences are kinda small, changing letterspace by 1 or 2 pt, and scaling from 80 to 100% over a 10″ perdiod.
If I change only positions, the text moves fluidly, but with either letter spacing or scaling, the text grows or widens step by step and the animation is not fluid.
What else could I do to make letter spacing and scaling change fluidly in FCP 5?

What are you using to create your text? FCP’s text tool will likely judder between spacing moves. Title 3D or Grafitti will be smooth, but your scale and tracking moves are so small the will likely look like a mistake.
I’d do this in live Type or Motion at the very least, most probably I would use After Effects.

I’m using FCP text tool indeed.
I’ll try Title 3D and Grafitti first. It doesn’t look like an error, except for the judder (maybe also because I’m using rather big bold futura type for this).

You should really do this kind of stuff in Motion or Live Type.
They really excel at this and they came with FCP for a reason.
Right tool for the right job.

After some further work this week on titles like this I have to agree with John, Title 3D’s tracking is not perfect, use Motion or LiveType at the least, AE if you can.
