Gary Adcock – Varicam and PAL editing
Hey Gary,
A few post below you advised me to make a 720p25 capture preset to capture the Varicam offspeed contents and I’ve managed to do that and now I can capture both fast and slow mo clips and they are 25fps, instead 60fps which I did previously. The only thing with slow mo clips (the one I captured was shot at 50fps) is that I have to let it capture longer than the tape run if not I only get part of the clip and I think that’s the behaviour.
The issue right now is that I am editing all these clips in a 720p 25fps timeline (with a Kona 2) and I can play it back using the Kona 720p25 playback setting but I can’t record that out to the Panasonic AJ-1400 VTR as it doesn’t record 720p25. If I set the Kona playback to 720p50, the VTR can see the images but when I play the timeline, it doesn’t update the playback coz the output and timeline framerate does not match.
So I did the 720p50 XML trick (www.aulich-adamski.de) and copied the clips into this 50fps timeline and I can play it back using the Kona 720p50 playback setting but I had to render the timeline as it wouldn’t play smoothly.
Any idea ?

my apologies, somehow I missed this in my travels
FCP finally solved this with the 5.1.2 release.
the deck will do this over FW and SDI it is just that FCP does not.did you contact Bjorn?
He is a great guy and answered some of my questions on the 15/50 issues at IBCgary

how did you made it to capture 720p25? In my tests I could set up
the 720p25 frame rate but in fact the clip was always 720p50
(25p over 50p).I’ve also updated the documentation for 5.1.2 …
