Gamma shifts from Player to Player
We all know Snow Leopard changed the default gamma to 2.2. With that in mind then Final Cut should not be emulating 2.2 in the preview window any longer, because that would be a 2.2 screen gamma and then Final Cut doing a 2.2 preview on top of that. However when playing a file in Quicktime 7 Pro with the 2.2 Final Cut mode on it matches the Final Cut preview window!? Shouldn’t this not be true? Shoudn’t we with our monitor gamma set to 2.2 already be seeing it without the 2.2 emulation mode? When the same 10 bit 4.2.2 file is played in Quicktime X it looks completely different. Sounds like Final Cut’s canvas window is still emulating 2.2 and making it doubly dark now that Snow Leopard is 2.2 by default? In Apple Color the playback window on the computer monitor matches that of Final Cut and Quicktime 7 Pro with the 2.2 emulation on. But the monitor is already 2.2!! Isn’t this double duty? Any solution?
I have been having a lot of issues with gamma ever since jumping to Snow Leopard. The Kona SDI out to a broadcast monitor is calibrated correctly to bars and I trust it. However what I see on the monitors now in both the Final Cut Canvas and in the quicktime players all vary from player to player and are far from what I see on the Broadcast monitor. If I change my screen gamma back to 1.8 however…then the Final Cut Canvas looks pretty darn close to my Broadcast Monitor. I never had these issues pre-Snow Leopard. I am Calibration hell at the moment. Any thoughts or help would be great. -

Basically it looks like the entire Final Cut 3 Suite is still emulating a 2.2 gamma…even with Snow Leopard set to a 2.2 gamma. Thus all previews are way to dark. When I reset the monitor gamma to 1.8 all the previews in Final Cut, Color, and Quicktime 7 Pro with 2.2 emulation setting, then match my SDI broadcast monitor. Anyway to fix or remedy this?

Trust only your external calibrated monitor.
Then you can use the computer screen if you are making a web video.
