Gamma adjustments
i have a problem regarding dark videos: i’ve read up several alreading existing posts about fixing dark videos, but none of them work for me, probably because my video is really (very) dark. i would put up a picture but it’s really just black with a few white dots where the lamps were. i am going for a b-grade movie type of feel, and the video as viewed on the (digital) recorder while filming was much brighter, i.e. still dark but everything being clearly discernable; in Vegas its mostly black.
Video: divx 5 30fps (i understand vegas does not like divx) and i’ve already tried messing around with the gamma settings to no avail.
While playing the video on MediaPlayerClassic, it appears as bad as vegas but i can easily fix the problem by increasing the gamma in ffdshow and adding some blur and noise reduction. vegas refuses to do likewise though. any help would be much appreciated. tell me if some images would aid. thanks! -

Is your computer monitor calibrated correctly? Otherwise how can you trust the gamma you are trying to set? You can use the Levels FX and Color Curves FX to bring out any information that might be in the video. If you are using Vegas Pro, look at your Video Scopes while you do this to help you see what information is present.

I second this. goggle for an article by Douglass Spotted Engel that covers this, it is very good.
I haven’t tried the Colour Curves but it sounds a good way of dealing with the washed out colour you can get in low light.

Once your monitor is correctly calibrated and if it still looks dark, you need to consider how you intend the video to be displayed. If you are aiming for viewing on a TV, the TV may brighten the video without any action in Vegas. I usually have to burn a DVD to see how it will actually look on a TV.
