Gain Left On – Anyway to Clean Up the Noise?
I had a camera operator accidentally leave the gain on for a shoot and I’m wondering if there’s a way in the FCP 3 suite to get rid of the noise/grain, without buying a third party plugin? And if I do need a third party plugin, which would you recommend?

Not really- I had this recently, and it’s something which comes up here often (try a search?) one way is to apply a focus blur and increase the contrast to try and re”sharpen” the edges a little, but obviously this only works on some scenarios…. Or duplicate the layer, make the top layer a composite mode such as overlay or hard light, and us filters to decrease saturation, and add the blur on the bottom layer..again, this only works in some cases, and can look crap. Gain is a pain, and it’s a shame, cos it’ll make you insane…. and my rhyme is lame…. Topaz denoise is great, but costs money.

You should at least try using Neat Video Noise Reducer from Neat Video at https://www.neatvideo.com. I’m testing out the $99.00 Pro version now for a review. It certainly works. Takes a little getting used to and some tweaking to keep things sharp, but it undoubtedly will reduce gain noise.
