  • G5 upgrade – 2.5 or 2.7?

A quick question for Kona2 users.

We’re going to upgrade a suite from a dual 2.0 to a newer G5 and make the old machine a graphics station. We do some HD work and once you add the filters, plug-ins etc. some of the renders are getting mighty long even for short form pieces. If we didn’t need to the graphics station as well, we’d wait for faster G5s, but…

So the question is are there any issues (heat, different architecture, bus speeed, etc.) that we should watch out for when making the decision between the dual 2.5 (buying a refreshed unit through a local Apple store for about $2400) or the dual 2.7. The extra $600 for the tiny increase in processor speed seems like a lot for a little, and seems like the money is better spent on more ram and an upgraded graphics card for Motion.

    Thoughts?

Buy another Dual 2.0 (the original model), add 4GB RAM and an Apple 20″ monitor and it’s about the same price, if not less, than the G5 Dual 2.7 alone. That’s what I did. I was rather disappointed with the latest offerings and do not see the need to spend $3,000 for a Dual 2.7 when you can get the original 2.0 for $1,894 if they’re still around. I run uncompressed and DVCPro HD on my system with the Kona 2 with no issues.

I’m waiting until Apple releases a real upgrade to our current machines. Rumors are already starting to fly about quad-processors and the June WWDC event potentially debuting some sort of a new machine. I’m just hoping that Apple will have some new machines by the end of the year.
