  • G-Drive Thunderbolt 2 vs 3 vs USB 3.0 – strange speeds

I have two different G-Drives and thought I’d run a little speed test. They’re both single 3.5″ drive enclosures (not RAID). The first is a 10TB drive with USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 2 connections. The second is a newer 18TB drive with Thunderbolt 3 connections. I connected them to my M1 Pro MacBook Pro and ran Blackmagic Speed Test. The results were surprising:

    • 18TB Thunderbolt 3: 120 MBs write, 115 MBs read
    • 10TB Thunderbolt 2 (using Apple TB2 to TB3 adapter): 60 MBs Write / 60 MBs read
    • 10TB USB 3.0 (through USB 3 to USB C adapter): 230 MBs Write / 225 MBs read

These results were quite surprising, as I thought the order from fastest to slowest would be in reverse. Does anyone have any explanation for this?
