I was putting together a lecture on HDTV and found myself creating a table with the various HD recording formats. If you’re curious you can view it at: https://ttop.com/hd_formats.html

FWIW I focused on available features. For instance the HDV spec can asupport up to 4 channels, but it’s not yet offered. So I left it out.

Anyway make of it what you will. I’m going to try to keep it updated as best I can. If you have any corrections or comments on how to make it more useful please let me know. (I’m already working on a better presentation)

    Thanks

    some corrections

    the DVCPROHD spec for 1080 capture is 1280×1080 @ 4:2:2 8bit

    D-5 is not 100Mbps I believe it is 220Mbps

HDCAM SR is MP4 compression not DCT.

    Jim,

    Some corrections

DVCPRO HD 720P is 720×960 recorded to tape
HDCAM is 1080×1440 recorded to tape

HDCAM SR offers 440 and 880 Mbps if using the SRW-1 field recorder

I not sure but I doubt JVC HDV can do full raster 720×1280 recording.

Thanks for the fixes. I’ve updated the table.

I’m uncertain about Panasonic DVCPro HD in 1080 / 50i mode. In 50i does it capture at 1440 x 1080 or 1220 x 1080?. I’m checking this one out again.

BTW Upon googling Sony & Panasonic data I came across wikipedia’s on-line encyclopedia. It’s scary how large and accurate it seems to be.

    Thanks

That’s good to hear. My girlfriend, a university science librarian, cringes at the name as do many in the librarian community. Interestingly though, she told me just yesterday about a recent study that concluded there are similar rates of incorrect information in a random sampling of wikipedia and several print encyclopedias. The lesson, which they are constantly trying to get through to students, is don’t trust a single source.

That’s one of the things I so much appreciate about these forums and the preceding entries on this thread are a good example. People with a lot of expertise and varied experiences sharing information and opinion in a (usually) cooperative and friendly manner. Thank you all!

    David
