  • FW800 multiclip playback problem solution RAID0?

Posted by Moztu on September 21, 2005 at 12:51 pm

    Hello
We are working on a 2x2GB G5 with 4,5GB of Ram. Mac OS 10.4.2 and FCP 5.0.2. 2 FW800 drives chained, and get huge drops playing a multiclip sequence (DVPal) that has a max of 2 video and 3 audios for longer than a minute.

We were working on a G4 with a 3 x FW800 PCI card (it didn’t have any FW800 connection) and changed to the G5 thinking that the dual processor would solve the problem, but ovbiously not.

Could our solution be to convert our drives into a Raid 0? We could get a 3rd drive (1TB we where thinking, we need for some extra storage) and a PCI card for our G5.

We would appreciate some input on this, we are a bit desperate at this point.

    thanks

    Check a couple of things.
Shut down all other apps (especially itunes)
eject / unmount any disks or drives not being used.
Make sure that your audio is 48K , if not that could be a major culprit, as converting audio on the fly can make the video stutter, If you are working on content that has been “subcliped” and has a large number of cuts – the reading of the file from different points may not be fast enough on FW to handle the jumps.

    None of that.
We think it is because of the multiclip.

If I were you I would go with SATA drives. They are much faster than FW800. And, daisy chaining your two FW800 drives diminishes the throughput of both drives, its the nature of firewire.

Well, I would take that PCI fw800 card you had in your G4, stick it in your G5 and run a “dual channel” fw800 raid. You have one fw running your motherboard and one running off the PCI card and stripe them in OSX. This means of course you will have to restripe both drives and you will lose all of your data so be sure to back it all up before doing this.

Switching your drives to RAID0 would be another good solution (also requiring a back up).

You can also try and do an audio mixdown to see if it’ll fix the drop frames.

    Good luck and drivespeed.

is there a cheap solution on SATA Drives? They would need to be external, we need a good 1,5TB to finish off this long, long job.

Newegg has Maxline III 250gb SATA drives for $105. These are Maxtor’s drives with a 5-year warranty.
