You have to activate it in the View>Video menu first, but once it’s been turned on Cmd-F12 will toggle it on and off.

    All the best,

how do you turn this shortcut on in the view menu?

My computer doesn’t seem to recognise it, all it does when I press cmd F12 is turn the volume up.

Just a head’s up: if the audio is going up and down while when you attempt this shortcut, that probably simply means that you are using a Macbook Pro with the shortened keyboard. In this case, the shortcut is:
    fn+Cmd+f12. Simple enough.
