Hello all, this is my first post here.
I have been asked to edit a 30 minute DVD of a play down to a 10 minute video for youtube.

Assuming that the DVD is already ripped to .vob files (I used DVD shrink)…

What would be your favoured workflow, including project settings, render settings and codec?

I’ve been playing around for a while now with various settings and codecs. I started by renaming my .vob file to .mpg and just dragging it into the timeline, then beginning to edit, but jerky playback results in the timeline (NOT due to my computer speed btw). Ought I to convert the mpg to uncompressed video before I start to edit? Im a bit confused here and Im no expert with this, although i have some video knowledge thanks to being a VJ, but of course that uses vastly different techniques. Any help much appreciated – and bullet pointed simple answers would be lovely.

First…You need to use the “import from DVD DISC” feature
in vegas to automatically convert it to mpeg2 and place it
in order on the timeline….do your editing…Then render out
    as : MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid)…640 x 480…MP3 audio…30 fps Mpg4.

1 – edit VOB or mpeg in timeline…
2 – my render settings for you tube:

    – MainConcept AVC/AAC (mp4) with custom settings (from initial iPod 640 x 480):
    – Video rendering quality: best
    – frame rate: 30
    – pixel aspect: 1
    – Num. of reference frames: 2 and check Use deblocking filter
    – Variable bit rate (not using 2 pass, but you can test it also…)

…. give me very good results and also can be switched as “watch in high quality mode” when you upload to YouTube.

Thank you both. I will try the second approach, though dont yet have the MainConcept AVC/AAC codec. Really appreciate the help

Anyone else have success with a different mwthod?
