We plugged our ADVC-100 into one of our PC computers, and it is no longer recognized by Windows, nor does it seem to work at all (two led’s are constantly on regardless of pushing the button on top or changing any dip switches.)

We tried our other datavideo box, which does the same thing, and that appears to have been fried also – no longer recognized by windows.

Could the firewire card be causing these devices to fail, the cable, or something else?

I am hesitant to plug any more devices into this computer.

    Suggestions?

Well, I sure would be tempted to go buy another firewire card no matter what, given their really cheap cost.

Now, have you tried these devices on another PC ?

One thing to try is hold the button on the ADVC for a few seconds and see if you are getting bars on the monitor. Although, that unit may still be bad on the DV side, that would really make it unlikely that it had a power surge going through its circuitry.

BTW, when you say the two LEDs are constantly on, is that with the firewire plugged in ?

on the non Canopus unit, I can generate color bars no problem, but still no luck getting the computer to see it.

The canopus unit, aside from a visible flicker on screen when powering the unit on or off, I cannot get color bars nor get the computer to recognize it. I have tried this on 2 other machines.

We ordered a new ADVC-110, and will replace the firewire card in the machine in question, and cross our fingers.

I think it had something to do with the external power which the ADVC-100 required. Because the 110 gets it

That makes sense. Both devices in question are AC powered.
Odd that we used them both for years without fail.

The failures coincided with moving the computer to another location.
We thought perhaps there was an electrical fluctuation, but an electrician confirmed we are receiving 1.21 jigowatts as to be expected 🙂

So it’s an unfortunate coincidence. But good to hear we are not alone.

Odd that aside from the COW, I have seen little from manufacturers about the firewire power dangers, especially the i-link problem.
