Any able to shine any light on this problem??

I have a shot that i need to freeze that comprises of 5 video layers…2 graphics layers (animation + alpha) and 3 video layers (uncompressed 10bit pal).

I have render the shot and then created a freeze. When its edited onto the end of the shot there is a very definite drop in the video levels. The freeze has not been deinterlaced either and visually you can tell that both fields are playing.

Its most noticeable on the animation – there is a logo with a bright yellow “flaring sun” particle effect behind it that just drops its brightness on the freeze.

Its got me baffled – any ideas?

    Adam,

If you color corrected the underlying footage the color correction does not automatically find its way into the frezze frame, you must copy it to the freeze frame.

    Hi David,

no – no colour correction on any of the tracks. 1 video track has a gaussian blur, and the two graphics tracks use 4 point garbage mattes but those are the only treatments used.

looking at the problem through a scope – it looks like the gamma drops by about 5% between the video and the freeze.

    Hi Adam,
I don’t know if could work but I would try nesting the sequence and droping a de-interlacer after the freezing. BTW which codec is your time-line?

[lightning ad] “1 video track has a gaussian blur”

My point was that you need to copy whatever filters you applied to the freeze frame too…

David, i see what you mean…i shall try that.

Rafalaos, i’ve tried the nesting and it made no difference. the timeline is 10bit uncompressed 422 pal.

I think the easiest way, although it doesn’t solve the underlying problem, is to digitize the material out to digibeta, re-digitize it and do a freeze on the new import. That is something i have had to do in the past and works perfectly everytime!!

When you tried ‘nesting’ where were the filters?
I’d try nesting the clip and its freeze only, then apply the filters to the nest. That SHOULD work …
(It’ll be quick to do if use the copy & paste attributes functions – you won’t have to recreate any filter effects.)

    let us know.

    Neil.

the trouble is there are no filters in use. The bottom track has gaussian blur – but track is only visible at the extreme edge of frame, to hide a reframing issue caused by repositioning an old packshot for new brand graphics.

the only other filters are two 4pt garbage mattes. I can’t see how they could cause the problem

    Doh!!

    i have found the cure!!

it seems when i selected the offending tracks and told FCP to “Render only… needs render”, it was not rendering the freeze but leaving it in a preview state.

Forcing a full render of all video cures the problem.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.
