Well, here are your options:

The first 2: Only use them when the edit is done and it’s effect time, because you’ll have a limited amount of time. If you do use them, though, and the higher ups love them–use it as leverage to get some cash to buy them.

1. Sapphire Effects from http://www.genarts.com They’re fully functional for 3 weeks–after that, buy them (LOTS OF MONEY but totally worth it) or you’ll have a watermark on your footage.

2. Boris BCC Effects at http://www.borisfx.com 14 Day trial, fully functioning. Again, after 2 weeks either spend the dough (MONEY but not as much as Sapphire) or you’ll have watermarked footage.

If you haven’t already downloaded these, do so right now.

Free blur effect: https://www.digitalfilmtools.com/cs-3/cs3dwnld.php Download the demo for “Composite Suite AVX”. It’ll put the whole list of effects in your Effects Palette–all of which will display a watermark until paid for–EXCEPT the CS_FastBlur. This one is free.

Duplicate your footage, Apply the CS_FastBlur ever so slightly, then your free Transfer effect, set it to Add, do some adjustments and you can get a nice, soft, blown out dream feel. Play around and come up with some other good stuff. Especially when combined with some clever Color Correction.

hello again mike

i am trying to use the sapphire effects but when rendering it seems to render (show the time that ittakes to render) but when rendering is over the effects still has the blue dot !!! what could b the problem? i tried rendering to another hard drive but that didnt help

That’s odd. Have you tried restarting the Avid app to see if it works then? Sounds like Avid is losing trakc of the render files. You might want to shut down the Avid, delete the database files, then restart. Avid will rebuild them–maybe that will help. It’s a shot in the dark, but might be worth a try. I’ll see if I can find out more and get back to you.

What about playing with color correction in some new layers?

For example you can make a new layer and play only with the shadows color, and lightness.

Then another layer only playin with master highlights….

Of course dont forget to use the free blur effect maybe at 2%

There’s a freebie “Transfer Mode” effect also available from the Cow’s Archnemesis…which I can’t post the link to here directly. However, I can point you to another site, which will give you the link you need. There’s a few editing tips/techniques I wrote on there, as well.

Thank a lot guys this was very helpful, I like the cartoon effect (Sapphire Effects) so I’m going to design the whole opening using that effect. Thank you very much. As for the promo i found more than i need, actually… there is one effects missing, an affect that works on the movement of the shot an gives the illusion as if its film not video. Maybe I missed that out ?

You can use Avid’s built-in FluidFilm effect, which is on XPro 4.5 and later (as well as MC 1.5 and later, and Symphony Nitris, etc.) FluidFilm is nothing more than a canned timewarp effect that uses FluidMotion rendering to make your interlaced video move like progressive. BEWARE, however, since it takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R to render! I’m not kidding, dude, your kids will grow up while you wait for it to render if you apply it to a sequence!

3Prong’s SpeedRamp supposedly does this as well, along with its primary function of being a 3rd-party Timewarp/Fluidmotion effect. It’s cheap…less than $100 for XPro. Around $200 for Media Composer. https://www.3prong.com

You could also export your sequence to After Effects, where you can use the Magic Bullet Suite by Red Giant Software. The Bullet is INCREDIBLE and worth every expensive penny they charge for it. https://www.redgiantsoftware.com

how come i don’t have “fluidFilm” effect in my Avid ?!!!
i have xpress pro 5.5.3

i’ve installed the 3Prong effects and moved them to the plugins folder but can’t find them in my effects folder ! i’ve restarted the computer but that didnt change anythig!!

FluidFilm is under the “Timewarp” category in the Effect Palette. If it’s not in there, reinstall your Avid software.

As for your missing SpeedRamp effect, which folder did you install it in, the “AVX Plugins” folder or the “AVX2 Plugins” folder? It should be in stalled in the standard “AVX Plugins” folder. Another thing to try: open your “AVX Plugins” folder and see if there’s another folder in it also called “AVX Plugins” with your SpeedRamp plugin installed there. If it is, select the SpeedRamp AVX plugin, right-click, select “cut” then back out to the REAL “AVX Plugin” folder. Right-click again, select “paste” then delete the now-empty AVX Plugins folder inside the REAL AVX Plugins folder. Funky, I know, but it’s happened to me several times.
