Frames Being Skipped
Posted by Jake Huddleston on March 3, 2009 at 6:37 amMy Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 is not clearly playing my images on the timeline when they have very short frame rates (being used for stop motion animation). It plays so fast that it skips over a bunch of them. I have to play them over and over before they finally appear in order with none of them being skipped. Is there a way to fix this problem?

March 3, 2009 at 11:33 amAre you importing them as an image sequence? (I believe Movie Studio has this option) This will make Movie Studio treat them as footage allowing you to specify the frame-rate. Also be sure that the image size and the project size match. You don’t need the images bigger than the project and it will slow down playback if you don’t match them.

March 4, 2009 at 6:08 pmturn down your preview rate, or do a ram render (shift b) to see a region at full quality.

March 8, 2009 at 3:15 pmHow do I make sure the image size is the same as the project size to keep images from being skipped when played fast? I’m not quite sure what that means…

You have to resize the images. Each image has a resolution. When you hover your mouse over them in Windows or open them up in an image editor it will show you the resolution. Your Vegas project also has a resolution associated with it. Usually this is DV 720×480. If the images is from a multi-mega-pixel camera (say 8MP) and you have a 720×480 project which is less that 1MP, you are feeding over 8x the information needed to create a frame. This is making Vegas work very hard to decrease the size by 8x less. You should use a graphics editor (like Photoshop) to bring the resolution of the images down to about 2x the size of the project. For DV that would be 1440×960.
Also be use you are importing them as an image sequence and not placing individual images on the timeline that are 1 frame in length.

March 9, 2009 at 11:42 pmSo I’ve tried out the method of importing image sequences for stop motion animation rather than having each image placed on the timeline individually. I was under the impression that this would solve the problem of any of my frames being skipped and not seen in the viewing box, which defeats the whole purpose of stop motion animation. If Sony Vegas is mainly for regular editing and is perhaps not suited for stop motion animation, that is fine, I just may consider trying other software.

– Also, when I rename a set of images so they will be sequential, the ‘image sequence’ option turns off. Any help with this as well?

Are they still sequentially numbered (i.e. image001.jpg, image002.jpg, etc.)?

Vegas works just fine for stop motion. When you import the image sequence you also have to tell Vegas how many frames per second the images represent so that it can assemble them correctly. Once that is set, it should play back fine providing that the source images are not multi-mega-pixel. If they are, then scale them down to your output resolution before importing them.

March 18, 2009 at 9:27 pmI use Bulk Rename Utility 2.3. It’s free and it can sequentially rename a whole folder of files with just a few clicks.

March 18, 2009 at 10:19 pmWhen I import an image sequence and place it on the timeline, it seems like there is a blur effect on and/or between each image. I can’t find an option for this anywhere. What might be causing this and how can I change it?
