Frame rate related problem.
Hello
I am a beginner in video production so sorry for stupid questions. I’m working on a short student movie project that is in its post production stage and need some help with a couple of things.
The project was shot with JVC Everio GZ-HD320 which to my knowledge shoots 1080 60i but I may be mistaken.
Everything went smoothly until burning the project onto a DVD; when playing on a TV screen the footage seems quite “quick” if compared to playing it on a computer. By quick I mean that it seems just a tad too fast than it should be, lacking that movie kind of quality…
Well because I’m just a beginner that was the first time that frame rates crossed my mind, maybe playing with them helps? My sequences are 25 fps (that is okay, isn’t it? I’m from England so 25 is PAL…)
So I was wondering that maybe rendering all of the footage on the timeline into 24 would help. What do you think? On a computer screen it looks okay, but the downside is that it becomes more blurred: for example, a hand held scene became annoyingly blurred. I know that it’s normal since it removes a frame per second but do you think it looks better on TV? Or would you have any other solutions to get the TV version be a little bit more life like not so artificially quick?
By the way, is the difference between 24 and 25 really noticeable? Should I ever even consider making a short movie with 25 if the intention is to make it as cinematic as possible?

Ya, You shot 60p or 60i from the looks of the cam. Do you have frame rate options on the camera menu?
Drop the clip into a NEW sequence in FCP and let FCP choose the settings for you.

That’s actually what I’ve done and FCP chose 25fps which made it even bit more confusing…
Any ideas about converting to 24 and its pros and cons?

The problem is that once the project is on a dvd, it looks a little too fast moving. Just so that sometimes you don’t notice it but sometimes you get an unnatural feel to it.
So I’m wondering whether converting to 24 would make it seem slower thus more natural. And if I decide to make it a 24fps project, how should I deal with sequences it gets too blurred?
I also had problems with the smooth cam (it’s jerky when on dvd, on computer works just fine) and was wondering whether it could be related to frame rates.
