I have a 1TB Hitachi External Hard Drive that I used for editing in a PC based editing system called Edius. It was working fine…I deleted everything on it and attempted to re-format for my Macbook Pro in order to use it for FCP editing. It would not erase, partition or run firstaid…I got the same error message each time saying that the computer was unable to perform the function and there was a problem with the drive.
Before I tried to format the drive both the Mac and the PC “saw” the drive…after I attempted to reformat it, neither “saw” it when I plugged it into the computers, but both saw it in “disk utilities” when I attempted to format it.
I took it to Apple to get some help from a “Genius” and they told me the drive was bad…I don;t buy it. It was working fine until I tried to reformat. One note…I did mistakenly begin a reformat of the drive to FAT32, but stopped it after a few seconds…not sure if that would screw anything up.

If anyone has any advice…or anything else to try to fix the problem, I would appreciate it. I don;t want to give up 1TB of space!

    Thanks

    Dan

Try to format it in a PC as FAT32, then try to re-format it again in your Mac as MacOS Extended, Not Journaled.
