forced deinterlace of hdv 1080/25 psf?!?
hi,
i’m sure this is a faq but i honestly couldn’t find the answer here or elsewhere.
ok, i’m editing material shot in 1080p25 using canon xl h1’s and hv20’s. they record as 1080i (psf) of course and that’s how it enters my fcp on capture, nothing i can do about that it seems, even if i use the 25p easy setup.
now if i use the 1080p25 sequence setting in fcp it deinterlaces my already progressive material, even if i manually tag the clips as having field order none. this is not how it used to work, i don’t know if it’s because i was on fcp 5 or because i was working in sd, but deinterlace was never done automatically before.
ok, so why don’t i just edit in 50i then? it works great of course, no forced deinterlace, except all effects then get rendered as interlaced. few things are more ugly than interlaced dissolves between progressive clips, plus i’m mastering to 25p so i’d have to deinterlace everything, which sort of defeats the purpose of doing this in order to avoid deinterlacing. 🙂

yes it is
the format ALWAYS plays out to displays as interlace = the delivery medium is 50i
The other issue is that your cameras do not record an industry standard 25p format- canon uses their own F mode which is not the same P outside of their camera system.gary adcock

no, it’s not how it used to work. assuming that people are lying might be a good strategy for dr house, but you come across as just as rude as him, the difference being that he’s always right while you just show your ignorance. 🙂
anyway, i think you just misunderstood. the problem, which is new in fcp 6, is that fcp automatically deinterlaces footage placed in a progressive timeline. i don’t want it to. how do i stop it?

i know that’s the issue. i was asking for the solution. fcp 5 handles it gracefully by simply ignoring it. 🙂 canon cameras use psf encoding, just like hdcam, xdcam and most other 1080p formats i’m aware of, so it’s not a curiosity.

Just recently figured out a workaround for this field doubling issue — please let me know if it works for you.
1. Set the field dominance of the captured clip(s) to None.
2. Edit in a ProRes 422 1440x1080p25 sequence.I haven’t had any luck capturing true progressive from my HV20 with the 1080p25 Easy Setup — have you?

if its hdv keep sequence in the native format and make sure render in prores in sequence settings is set up
i would then use compressor to take your final edit and effects and get it change to prores at the settings you desire
then put in the right sequence and output using an prores HD capable card
will take ages but maintain quality

I should also say that you can use the HDV 1080p25 or ProRes 1440×1080 25p codecs for editing. Just be sure to change the field dominance on captured progressive clips from Upper to None. If you’ve already added clips to a sequence, you’ll need to change them separately.

actually that’s exactly what used to work in fcp 5, but doesn’t anymore. very annoying. i’m gonna try prores and see if that works better. thanks.
no, i haven’t been able to capture as 25p. i’m assuming it’s not just a flag, as with progressive dv, but a different codec with different color sampling? although my hv20 does recognize xl h1 material as being 25f when played back so it’s flagged for sure. maybe fcp should simply have a psf setting? wait, that’s what it had by letting you set the field dominance of interlaced clips to none. 😉

ok, you’re right. i was doing things in the wrong order. so, setting the clips to none *does* work. i was sure i had tried it. thanks a lot everybody.
why is this an issue at all? i would have understood if they applied the deinterlace filter automatically, like they do with shift fields, but silently and non undoably like this? weird.
