August 30, 2007 at 4:51 pmWhen you connect to a sony monitor, and connect from the OUT of the sony monitor, whether it be component, composite, or YC, its only a “loop thru” in that the signal is passively tapped for the one monitor, and looped to the next. Other than the fact that an HD signal scrambles an SD monitor, it is prfectly fine to loop through (as others have said)
HOWEVER
I am opposed to looping signals for other reasons, primarily ground loops and loss of signal strength, which shows up as lower chroma or video level, or both
I found a 4×4 rgbs router on ebay for 50 bucks, and i use that. it makes all the diff in the world. there are always routing switchers on sale there, and a good amount are RGB or RGBS, which are fine for analog component.
hope this helps

November 20, 2007 at 7:56 pmHi there,
we’re getting ready to upgrade the client viewing monitors in our two HD edit suites. We’re interested in the Panasonic 42″ plasmas, but are looking for some advice.
We’re shooting all on VariCam, editing in FCP w/Kona LHe cards. We have the pro, Panasonic 17″ monitors connected via HDSDI for our editors, for up close work, color grading, etc.
For clients, we have 26″, older Toshiba 720 progressive HD monitors mounted to the wall and connected via component video cables directly out of our Kona LHe breakout box.
What model plasmas would you recommend, given that our HD footage is all 720p VariCam? Also, is it best to connect to those monitors via component HD out of our Kona breakout boxes? Or is there a better way to connect to reduce latency? Thanks for any advice you can give us.

We loop our Panny Pro Plasmas out of our Component Sony Monitors though if you have the Component available directly out of the Kona, run that in.
With 720 there is zero latency. With 1080, there’s about a 2 frame offset.

Do you know the model# of your Panny Pro Plasmas? We are looking at the Panasonic TH-42PH10UKA 42″. Is that, by chance, the same model you have? Are you happy with them?Jennifer Isenhart

I’m assuming the 10 is the newer version of what we have. They’re outstanding monitors.
