I know this board has many professionals and beginners on it, I was wondering where you went to school and what level of education you have to have the job that you do. I am pretty much looking for career advice, I have learned avid, went to school for broadcasting, but now I want to learn more about film and compositing in post production. I would ideally like to work as an editor / compositor on films/ features in the Vancouver area.

Any suggestions would be sooo appreciated!

    Thanks in advance

    Yeah, I agree.

I’ve learned a lot off of this site.

I work with a lot of schools (HS and College) and kids HAVE AE on their computers but out of 30 kids, maybe 2 will know anything at all about AE. So, when I’m there around kids, I’m chatting them up on the importance of the software and how necessary it is to know it to get anywhere professionally in the industry.

Good lord. I would have given anything to have my school district have AE in class when I grew up. We had two VHS decks and a Videonics titler keyboard. The titler had NO overlay features in it as I recall.

Sad thing is… I’m not even old.

community college fine arts degree, plus a BFA in Computer Art at School of Visual Arts, NYC. Oh, but I learn more at work than anywhere else. Nothing is more educational than working on a compositing team, sending shots back and forth, etc.
Communal problem solving is second to none.

As I am currently in school for a creative professional position, and I am close to graduating, I offer this piece of advice. (take it or leave it) I learned everything I could from my teachers but the other half of my knowledge comes from books, sites(Cow Rules!!), other students, books, just sitting in front of AE for many hours.

School will teach you how to work well with others and be on deadline. And it might give you some working knowledge of any program. But in order to become a person who “KNOWS” AE one must take it upon themselves to learn every detail about the program.

with all that said. I would go to school. I would also learn everything I could from the great folks at the Cow and other creative outlets.

    See yas
