    Hi,

We’ve been asked to provide footage for an event in the UK. They’d like 10 mins of rough cut B Roll, and a 20-min interview we conducted with the guy organising the event.

The footage will be used at a launch party for potential sponsors of the event.

Only problem is, we don’t know what the going rates are for footage in the UK. Can anyone shed some local knowledge light on this? Even non-UK-specific info is gratefully received.

    Cheers!

Are you selling stock footage or doing an original shoot?
If you’re shooting for them charge your shoot rate. You live where you live and that’s where you should base your rate. It’s YOUR cost of living that you need to cover.

We were shooting our own project and met up with the guy at a related event. He was there promoting his own one.

We’re a new company – still trying to figure out a shoot rate 🙂 …. but we’re basically selling them footage we have anyway and making sure we retain usage rights.

Shoot rate, any rate should cover your cost of existence. Profit increases with skills/values. Figure out what your base rate is to stay in business and that’s . . . your base rate. There are MANY threads on the Cow Business forum about that.

Selling pre-existing footage . . . you have pre-existing interviews that fit their needs? I’ve never heard of “stock” interviews.

Stock footage vary quite a bit. I don’t know how one predicts covering costs on that since one can’t really predict how much will sell unless you’re very experienced at selling. I’m not sure how anyone can run a business primarily on stock footage. Too unpredictable.

As Craig suggests, the interview you bill at your daily rate for shooting. That rate is determined by weighing your experience in relation to what the going rate is in the market. Less experience would be below the median rate, more experience would be above.

[Jimmy Visser] “We’re a new company – still trying to figure out a shoot rate :)”

That kind of suggests a lower rate.

[Jimmy Visser] “We were shooting our own project and met up with the guy at a related event.”

Now, that’s a different situation. Is this event a good venue for you to showcase your pre-existing project? Would there be potential buyers or investors that you could use this as a presentation for, that you would be networking with?
