    Hi there,
Creative Cow’s website usually helps me to figure out technical problems by just browsing the forums.
Unfortunately that’s not the case right now so I decided to post my own little cry for help.

I’ve shot footage with my sony pd150 16:9 (pal)
and it looks really bad in fcp

    My fcp settings are:
audio/video settings: dv pal 48khz anamorphic
    sequence settings:
    frame size 720 x 576 CCIR 601 / DV PAL (5:4)
pixel aspect ratio CCIR 601 / DV PAL (5:4) anamorphic box is ticked
    field dominance lower (even)
    editing timebase 25
    compressor dv-pal
    audio rate 48khz
    depth 16-bit
    config channel grouped
(so nothing unusual as far as I can tell)

in fcp the footage looks bad, like a really low-quality youtube movie (also after rendering and exporting). When I watch the logged clips in quicktime, it looks ok, not extremely good, but better. So I think the problem is in fcp not in the camera ( I’ve just had it serviced and was afraid something went wrong there). The thing is I’ve worked with this equipment&settings for the last couple of months and never had this problem. So I don’t know where to start looking for the solution. The only difference now with former projects is that I am working from an external HD and that it is a lot of footage (25 dvcam tapes).

I did read somewhere that the pd150 works with square pixels, could this be it? (sounds strange to me)
If someone could help me out and tell me where to start looking for a solution it would be very much appreciated!
    thank you in advance!

You can judge the original footage by hooking the cam up direct to a TV and playing the tape. the pd150s 16:9 is not all that pretty unless you are using a 6×9 Anamorphic Lens. Are you?

    hi, thanks for your reply

    sequence playback video quality settings
    render&playback
    filters=on
    frame blending=on
    render
    framerate 100%
    resolution 100%
    codec same as seq codec
    master templates and motion proj
    quality: best
    always use=on
    ……………………………………………………..
    playback control in system settings
    RT: save
Video Quality: high (was set at ‘dynamic’ but i changed it, no real difference)
    frame rate: full
    pulldown pattern: 2:3:2:3
    gamma correction: accurate
    frame offset: 4
    record: full quality

    play base layer only=off
beep when playing unrendered audio= on
    scrub high quality=on
    multipleclip playback=on
    ………………………………………………….
    export settings:

    setting: current setting
    include: audio video
    markers: none
    recompress=0ff
    movie self-contained=on
    ………………………………………………….
    anything strange here?

I am not using an anamorphic lens ( i do use wide angle), just the 16:9 camera setting

    thanks again

Do a search on the cow and elsewhere for 16:9 pd150. After reading such, I never tried shooting 16×9 with the vx2000, pd170, and pd150. They have 4×3 chips. You want 16×9, time to upgrade to a HD cam, which is designed for that aspect ratio.

That said, there are folks that did what you want and although they lost resolution, the end result did not look horrible. Just not great.
