  • Follow-Up to Dell 2407 vs. Apple Cinema 23″

    Hi all,

Last month I posted a thread on here comparing the Dell 2407 to the quality of the original Apple Cinema Display 23″ and noted that the Dell looked a little soft.

So I returned the Dell and purchased a new Apple 23″ Cinema Display. Well that display looked basically identical in quality to the Dell, but there was a problem. Images were burning in on the screen after as little as 30 seconds. This was especially noticeable if I brought up the Display Preferences and left the Solid Color blocks sitting on the screen. 30 seconds later, move the Preference panel and a ghost image of the blocks was still in the original position.

I worked in FCP for about 10 minutes and then hid the app. Pretty much the entire interface was still visible in the desktop. I did some research and found that this is a common problem with the new Apple Cinema 23″ displays. It doesn’t seem to affect the 20″ and the 30″. We actually have a 20″ here as well and it’s perfect.

Just to ensure it was a monitor and not computer issue, I connected the 23″ to my 17″ Powerbook and to a different G5 computer and the issue followed the monitor.

So I ended up returning that and purchasing a new Dell 2407 WFP which is what we’re running right now. There’s still nothing that matches the contrast of the Apple monitors that I’ve seen, but this Dell is working and it does look good. Just wanted to pass this along in case anyone else here is seeing that burn in issue on the Apple 23″.

I have no experience with any of these monitors, but I did want to point out one thing.

Whe the prices dropped on the Apple LCDs yesterday they also quietly raised the contrast ratios and brightness levels on the 20″ and the 23″ monitors.

I can’t say what that means in regards to your problems, Walter, but it does mean Apple’s been fiddling with the specs since you did your test. If anyone goes into an Apple store anytime soon it might be worth trying to replicate this problem again and see what happens.

Last time Apple fiddled with the specs I beleive it was just on paper. Same product. Just using different ways to judge the contrast – like the other companies do. In other words, they changed the specs, but if you order a new display, it’s the same one that was sitting there in the warehouse last week.

I purchased the monitor just two weeks ago so I’m thinking it’s the same monitor that’s in the stores today. If you go to the Apple Support site and go into the discussions with the 23″ displays, seems to be an ongoing problem.

Hopefully they’ll have it sorted out soon because we still love our 2 year old 23″ display.

I’ve seen the ghosting. I assumed it was something up my display. Didn’t know it was across the board…kind of makes me feel better…I think?
The ghosting does go away after a while. Definitely not burn-in like what is experienced with the old plasma monitors.
