Flying Cow Question
I have one of these that I haven’t used since my pre-Kona and Decklink card days. As I recall I used it to convert digital audio to go to my mixer, but I haven’t needed it since using the cards. What I’m wondering about is AES audio, and if that’s something I should be using with my Kona card, and if so, what’s the best way to configure it? I have audio coming into my mixer from 3 sources (decks) and only the Kona card gives an AES in/out option. So I’m just curious as to anyone’s take on this.

Not sure what you are asking. If you are using decks with analog audio, the Flying Cow is a fine way to get your audio in and out of the Kona. I do it all the time.
I have an analog Mackie mixer that I only use for monitoring. I use the analog output of the Kona for that. -

What I’m asking is, what are the advantages to using it and how to configure? How does AES figure in? Audio is a technical weak point for me, so please understand.

You mean instead of using audio over SDI? You need to use AES audio only if the deck you are laying to, or NLE you are editing from, does not support embedded audio over SDI. This happens with older/legacy systems and decks. the digital audio was still separate from the digital video. I would only use it if you have to output to a deck that does not support audio over SDI or if you need to embed analog audio from an analog source into your video stream upon ingest to a Kona 2 or 3. I use mine as a monitoring tool as I don’t have a Kbox, and I also use it to get analog audio into my Kona 2 system if the io is tied up.
