Flickering in AO & GI Render
Posted by Justin Puda on March 3, 2009 at 10:32 pmHello,
I have a scene laid out using AO & GI with a very slow pan/zoom shot moving across a room. The ceiling and floor of the room seem to be showing a lot of flickering. I have looked online about these problems and haven’t found a whole lot.
One idea was to use SMB (scene motion blur) to take care of the antialiasing, and turn antialiasing off.
What do you guys think here at the Creative Cow?

I am not using any animation modes in my gi. This is my first in depth use of gi on a project, where/how would I apply those settings? Thanks again brian.

March 4, 2009 at 4:34 pmin Render Settings/Global Illumination the top pull down has Camera Animation and Object Animation modes as well as Standard and Stochastic. It sounds like you want Camera Animation mode but the Help has more info on what each mode is good for in the Modules/Advanced Render/Global Illumination/Parameters section.

I rendered it out with the camera animation mode on. It didn’t help, it actually ended up having more flickering and bouncing. I think I may have pinpointed the problem though.
It is only really flickering on the ceiling and floor of the scene. Both the floor and ceiling have photo textures applied to them that we purchased from 3dstudio.com. Could these textures be contributing to the problem?

March 6, 2009 at 9:11 pmdefinitely, in the manual check out the Sampling (click on the image name in the matrial editor)the default is MIP sampling but perhaps SAT will do better and the settings of both can be tweeked. I think the other sampling modes are mostly best with stills (can’t check the manual right now) but the Help has some good info.

Thanks again for all the help. I’m going to be re rendering that scene early this week. I’ll try and post a link to show you the final results.

Here’s a link to a rough composite render of the scene using SAT mapping and Full Animation mode in GI for you to check out –

The flickering is still happening. Could this be something do with me using net render on the project? I have read online that there can be issues with GI and net render. Any suggestions?

March 11, 2009 at 3:12 amthat doesn’t so much flicker as crawl… and at a distance (close) where it shouldn’t be that much of a problem. Do you have Scene AO on? If so, try turning it off and put AO into the materials where needed (the racks etc.) As a quick test try the walls/floor/ceiling only with AO or GI, not both.

What channel in the material would i apply the AO too? Would I not need to apply it to the floor or ceiling materials?
