Hi, first time after effects user:

I just need directions to a good tutorial, or any tips for the following issue:

At work we are doing a 20 minute show about diamonds. I just want to create several neat little transitions to break up all the footage, and help keep things flowing along.

I was thinking about some sort of sparkling transitions, or one where diamonds fall accross the screen. stuff like that. ANy help or directions on how things like this could be done would be appreciated. I know im being vague but i havent used after effects so dont really know what to say.

    cheers

Actually, experience with AE is not required at your stage — imagination is. And a little experience watching sports television.

    – You need to change the screen from footage A to footage B.
    – You can have something travel across the screen, say, a big diamond, to cover a transition.
    – You can have a diamond-shaped hole enlarge, revealing image B.
    – As you suggested, you can have a bunch of diamonds crossing the screen (up, down or across), eventually filling the screen and revealing footage B. Particle playground should do this, using a diamond image.
    – You can also make the screen bloom out to white like a flash, covering a transition.

Experiment by using a moving layer as a track matte to reveal the layer below. Search the help for “track matte”. Once you get that down, it’s then your task to pick the right image to use as a track matte.

    Hope that helps,
    Steve
