I financed a video interview and had a friend shoot the footage. He used a green screen in a small hotel room. The light wasn’t evenly distributed and was too bright. The light shined down from the upper left corner, across the interviewee’s face, and was way too bright, leaving shadows on the face, and turning the interviewee’s hair from gray to bright white. How can I fix this in Sony Vegas?

To much light is always a bigger problem then a shot that is to dark. But without having seen your shot, I would suggest to use the color curves, if nessecary combined with a mask on a duplicate track as shown in this example:

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I seem to remember that if it is overexposed, there is little to be done as the white pixels do not contain color information anymore.

Yes you are right. Overexposure is very difficult to correct. Anyway, if you have to try something, I think that the color curves is the best thing to try. However, the result will never be perfect.
