So who has successfully fit a GTX 580 in their Mac Pro (preferably an Early 2008) and could actually shut the side panel with all 3 power connectors connected…

Even if i cut the hell out of that case and ran cable perfectly, those power connectors coming off the side of that giant card would be flush with the edge of the case even if bent and broken at a 90 degree angle…

How is this done? Run with case open? Go to a blacksmith and buy a custom made “2 inches more wide” side panel?

    Ideas? Comments? Slanders? Anything?

I have a 12-core 5,1 MacPro but the cords fit in and the door shuts fine so I am not really sure without a picture what the problem is with your setup. Maybe the cords are too long?

    DaVinci 8.2.1 beta3
OSX 10.7.4 (SSD in second optical bay)
    MacPro 12-core 5,1 2.66 Ghz
    32GB RAM x4 8GB
    Software RAID 0 (8TB Internal)

3 power connects? There’s only two. You didn’t get the “classified” edition did you?

I hope you have a daily (hourly) backup with that 8TB RAID0 system. 1 disk fail and it’s over.

The classified doesn’t work in the Mac Pro. The standard edition barely gets by in a Mac Pro. Classified requires 30% more juice. Closing the case is the least of your problems. Return it and get a standard 3gb 580. It fits.

I have a dedicated GPU 450W power supply fits into optical drive bay ) for both 8 pins and a 6 pin. Functionally working fine, but I cannot close my case…

Are there like very flexible low profile cables available?

Without dremelling the case, it doesn’t seem possible. I have the same setup, and the power cable hangs out the side of the case.

It’s ridiculous isn’t it? Do you sometimes feel that Steve still gets the best of you even from the grave when you attempt to upgrade his trash to a standard that meets our modern day?

you could extend cables out from optical bay door and put psu on top of the machine.

side panel would still be the problem.

do you have standard pc card or have David flashed it ?

Yeah… I have an optical bay dedicated power unit that is working fine – but the connectors alone stick out past the side :(.

Its a standard card, I have not had it flashed yet.
