  • First time using Adobe Premiere CS3, capturing help?

This is the first time I’m using Adobe Premiere. I’m using CS3, Windows XP, and a Sony hvr-m15u as the Tape Capture Device threw Firewire.

I’m trying to capture the video from this device at the highest quality possable… I’ve been having problems with getting it to even see the deck as HDV, but I got that part taken care of, but now I’m trying to capture and it’s capturing into a MPEG file, and the file size is about the as uncompressed AVI from when I capture using Sony Vegas with regular DV…

Any help on getting better quality would be wonderful!

    Thank you.

    Hi James,

HDV is recorded as MPEG-2 on tape, and runs at the same 25Mbps data rate as DV, creating files of about 13GB per hour of video.

So, you’re not losing any quality capturing through 1394, you are getting the same file that is on the tape, which is Long-GOP MPEG-2 with 4:2:0 color.

If you wish to work with a better codec that will withstand compositing and multiple-generations, then you might consider the Cineform Neo Scene codec, which is 4:2:2 and easier to edit than native HDV. It will require converting your captured HDV clips.

Another option would be to use a Matrox MXO2 Mini adapter (requires CS4). This would allow you to capture direct from camera or deck using component HD or HDMI into Matrox, which would capture using the Matrox MPEG-2 I-Frame HD codec with 4:2:2 color at high data rates. Uncompressed is also possible, but not practical for most uses (requires high-end RAID array).

Thank you very much… I didn’t know some of that it helps me a great deal to know these things… I can get to work on capturing these tapes right now…

I’m sure i’m going to have to learn to edit soon enough, so I was hoping you would know a good beginers guide online I can look at? I’m familure with some Non-Linear editing, I used Avid many years ago, and currently use Sony Vegas often, but not Premiere…

    Thanks!

    Hey…

As far as I’m aware, you can’t cature video over USB… The only use of USB in my experience is to transfer still pics taken with the camera, and maybe use as a webcam (depends on the camera)…

My suggestion would be to use a firewire card to add Firewire to your computer.. I’ve done this in the past and it worked very well…

Thanks James. The bad thing is, I don’t have a firewire port on my computer. Do they make an adapter that I could plug into the usb port that would have a female firewire on the end that io could then take my firewire male into?any help is SO appreciated.

    Hey…

From what I understand, there is no usb to firewire adapter. because the base tech of usb works much slower then firewire.

you can get a firewire card for your computer easy enough though. they are very easy to install as well.

they even make pcmcia firewire cards if it’s a laptop you use…

I’d suggest taking the computer down to a local computer store (or talk to a computer tech if you know one) and they can put in firewire for you.. It really isn’t hard, and if you know the right person, it can be done very cheaply too…

Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
