So we’ve just about finished shooting our first feature film in majority 4K (some shots we’re inadvertently shot at HD, but about 90% of it is 4K, long story) so I thought I’d ask if anyone had any tips for first time 4K feature film editing.

Footage is currently stored on 3 Separate 4TB WD external drives, because you know, budget. We have PC’s punchy enough to handle initial edits; first 30 minutes of an Online edit was successfully done, but am currently having Audio drop out problems in playback in PP.

I’m wondering if we’d run into problems down the track or not if we went Online edit only. Are proxies a good idea? DNxHD’s pumped out through DaVinci perhaps? Majority of footage was recorded on ATOMOS Ninja Flame MOVs, with a handful of Sony a7s ii MP4s.

We will eventually colour grade in Davinci.

Is it also a thing to edit various chunks of the film/scenes in separate timelines, then combine them all later into a final timeline?

    Thanks for any help, folks.
    Rhys.

[Rhys Sherring] “Are proxies a good idea”

Work in Premiere’s proxy workflow. Better than generating proxies externally and relinking. Your drives are too slow for what you are trying to do by staying native the whole way. Especially if this is a 4K timeline.

I would suggest these basic steps.

    1. Rough cut using proxies in Premiere Pro, send XML to Resolve
    2. Grade from your originals in Resolve
    3. Send an AAF from Premiere to ProTools and do your sound edit/mix there, generate stems
    4. Recombine final picture reels and stems in Premiere or Resolve to generate your masters

you can’t make wide gamut masters from premiere because its color engine clips to sRGB. unless that’s all you need.

Can’t say I’ve used Premieres in house proxys before. I shall take a gander. Cheers.

I have no idea what a wide gamut master is hah.

    Ok, I export xml.
Then, I move the clip again to premiere’s timeline.
After editing everything, how can I retake the original file and size in the final version?
And should I export xml clip by clip? There is no a way to do it with all clips together?
