Over the past few years I’ve been teaching myself Compositing and some motion graphics by
practicing and taking some online classes. And along the way I’ve gotten some freelance gigs doing things like paint/cleanup, pulling keys, or creating some titles. I’m still very new (Just started migrating to Nuke last month)
and I have allot to learn. I would however, like to have a good demo reel that may perhaps get me some more work.

I’ve always benefited from the sound advice of sages and experienced professionals on CreativeCow. So I thought it fitting that I should get some pointers from here before I launch my demo reel into the world!
I will deeply appreciate any criticism and advice you may have to offer.

    Thank you!

    Hey Robert…

First of all, very good work… especially the compositing. Good job.

Since you were asking for comments/criticism, I’ll just give you one….

To me, compositing and motion graphics are two pretty radically different and disparate things (others may disagree). I’d personally probably rather watch a reel that is only compositing and one that is only motion graphics, rather than one that is mixed together. Or… if you do want to put them on one reel, I’d personally probably rather see one that has a compositing section, and a motion graphics section… rather than ping-ponging back and forth between the two.

From a reel standpoint, that’s about my only comment. With compositing reels I always like to see what the artist started with and finished with, and how all the bits and pieces came together… and yours does a good job of that.

    T2

It’s a nice reel. It doesn’t point to a *specific* area of VFX that you like or do best; it paints you more as a generalist. And that’s fine, too, if that’s true.

You can and should customize the reel to emphasize the key skills asked for in EVERY opening you try for. At least rotate the items so those key points are towards the front.

One thing I didn’t see a lot of was synthetic set extension. That is a huge area of VFX work on a lot of today’s shows. You might comp up some extensive photo-realistic period location, with as much detail as possible, and add actors and a standing set to
