I have an Iomega portable firewire drive I want to use to do remote editing. I use a macbook pro to get footage off a mini dv deck. I want to get the footage to this small drive but I cannot loop it out of another drive since this drive cannot loop it only has one firewire port. I also put it at the end of a firewire chain and it would not allow a file transfer to it. Please help as this drive is pretty useless if I cannot get footage to it. Happy New Year!

    1. Capture to another drive, then transfer the files to the drive you want.

    2. Use a FireWire hub. (May not work, but it costs very little to try.)

    3. For about $50, you can buy a new FireWire case with looping ports and move your drive into it.

For get doing any of that and get a FW express card for your MBP. Having the hard drive on a separate bus then the camera is a good thing to do anyway.

Here is an example it has 2 FW ports and 1 USB port

sorry to be so blunt but an express card is just a far better option.
