Fine Tuning PPCC for an Epic Red Edit – Mac OSX
Hello all!
I have a mixed frame size Red edit starting in a couple of weeks that I am preping for and wanted to discuss the system and it’s settings in order to get the best performance. We will have aprox 22tb of red media at mixed frame sizes from 1080 to 5k (compression ratio is usually around 5 or 6:1).
We are running:
12 core 2.93Ghz system (10.8.4)
24gb Ram 1333mhz
2gb NVidia GTX 680 – Slot 1
Blackmagic Decklink HD Exteme 3D+ – Slot 4 (running 9.7.7 Desktop Video)
Premiere Pro CC V7.0.1 (105)
4 port SATA card (uncertain of make/model)3 x Stardom 4bay crates connected via esata
Each with 4 x 3tb WD Red drives in Raid 5 config totalling 27tb spaceI’ve imported the media and created viewing sequences as Blackmagic 8bit 25p sequences which give video out no problem. However there is a varying degree of delay when I ask it to playback the media, even if I drop the quality to 1/4 playback. While this is at a currently acceptable level I dont want to have it get gradually worse as we sink into the 10 week edit, and I think it should be playing back without delay with the setup we have.
My gut says the delay is happening around the blackmagic card but I have no proof.
I haven’t been able to get sync playback through the blackmagic audio, and was getting some weird crackle, so have gone through the system line out to some crappy speakers, but would prefer to have the audio follow video and playout of our Adam A7X’s.
The audio buffersize is currently set to 512 although I have tried larger and smaller.
The thing that’s struck me is that the performance seems to go up and down a bit without much motivation, i’d be very interested to hear people’s thoughts and suggestions on this and i’m happy to try things out and report back.
I realise that I am asking the system to do a lot and I LOVE that we have good playback so far without having to transcode all the media which would take an age, i’m just reaching to the stars hoping I can get this machine to REALLY purr!
Hope i’ve not missed anything important, any help much appreciated.
