Fine or not brilliant to use PLASMA as computer display for a Mac Pro?

Are you talking about displaying the computer screen or NLE video out via AJA/Decklink/Matrox etc?

Using a plasma as main/only computer monitor as it were, plus for it to monitor FCP material…I saw one studio do this, a few years ago, should’ve asked them how it went…

It’s going to be rather limiting in screen real estate at 1080p. And if you want to use it for video display you’re not going to get proper results unless you output through a BMD, Matrox or AJA and run into a separate input on the screen. The whole thing sounds sorta tedious. Why would you consider the setup? Cost or space savings?

Both, cost and space – but I’m not locked into it – just saw some edit bay set up 3 years ago with it – it came to me that hey why not – but I couldn’t think of why not, so wanted to ask ya’ll…I do understand the need for a separate box, BM Intensity or Matrox

I guess burn in might be a problem, more so with plasma than regular display for computers but can’t think of any other real issues…But what are everyone’s thoughts? Instead of say an apple 27″ why not a good 50″ panny or LG plasma?

A 27″ monitor is 2560×1440; a 50″ plasma is 1920×1080.

How close do you intend to sit to the screen? You’ll probably want to be at least 6.5′ away (much closer and you’ll start resolving the pixels on the display or have to turn your head to look from one edge to the next).

Plasmas also produce more heat and use more energy.

Personally, I’d rather have the smaller screen with higher resolution.

For a computer screen why not a good Dell or a monitor that uses the same panel as the 27″ Apple but costs significantly less like this upcoming one from Monoprice?
