  • finding which bin(s) a media is in?

If I have media in more than one bin, can I tell which bin it’s in?

I would need this when for instance, I see media in the “all media” and want to know if I cataloged it in a sub bin.

    Cheers,

Interesting question. Since I never use media bins, I’ve never noticed this. You would think that a right-click on the media on the timeline should indicate the bin it’s in. I can see it as a useful piece of information if you have multiple copies of clips in different bins. (Why you would want to do this is another mystery, but you can).

Remember that no files are copied or moved when you put them on the timeline or Project Media window. You can put the same clip into multiple bins, but they are simply pointers to the actual file. (Remember, when it is on the timeline, it is an event. Not a clip).

    Hi Steve,

The trimmer/media pool is a great tool when you have a large project in need of logging segments for quickly finding footage.

An example of the need to know which bin a certain media is in:

As you go through each media in “all media”, you use the comment field of the media to describe the clips.

once you’ve done this, you create a bunch of sub-bins and start copying media to various bins (typically, to only one other bin). at some point you want preview media and you can’t recall if you had previously moved it to a sub-bin. you want a quick search to find it instead of looking in all the individual sub-bins.

I know it’s not something you’d do regularly, but my current project called for this “find which bin a media in “all media” is in.
