Sounds like your external drive is spinning down. Under energy saver, set the drives to never. Putting the project on the internal HD will mean almost the same.

Instead of minimizing the app, try using CMD-H to hide it.

Last, you may find that the drives stills spin down. Cocktail is an excellent (shareware) tool to prevent drive spindown.

Its hanging up , becoming un responsive with the project file on different drive then media

and.. it appears to be hanging up when I launch a project that is on a different drive – so its not the drive.

That tells me two things… Either you have a corrupted project file or corrupted media inside that project.

The easiest test would be to eject an disconnect your media drive, then start FCP and open your project. If it opens, you media will be offline. If FCP works fine, you have a corrupted media file. Searching for this is painful unless you can recapture it easily.

I wish it were that.j Its happening on every project and every project file since I re installed clean snow lep and FC.

The os is solid, so Im guessing there was an error in installing FC
that will be next I suppose
I have done all upgrades before and after installing FC

I would start a new proj.
Keep proj files on an internal HD
Keep media on Media Drives
set drives to no sleep.
Set backups to an internal drive.

By “internal Mac HD,” I assume you mean the system (OS) drive.

I’ve been using FCP since 2003 and I’ve never saved FCP project files on the system drive. I’ve never had any problems keeping FCP project files on a RAID (media) volume, either on my own either system or on any other system I’ve used.

Can you explain why one “should” store project files on a system drive?
