Final Cut wont play ProRes, kind of in a pickle!
Posted by Chris Scheidies on September 11, 2010 at 1:00 amHi all, I have a Mac Dual G5 2.5 with 3GB of Ram and I have all my hi def video on a separate drive. I can open the video with quicktime but when I open it with final cut it will only play a few frames then stop. The audio does continue. I have played with the RT settings but it does not seem to help at all. Oh it is final cut 6, the only thing I am trying to play is ONE video clip with the extra synced audio from a lav. This is a project that my client sent me if that helps. Thoughts anyone?

September 11, 2010 at 1:32 amApple ProRes as a codec is not stable in FCP running on a G5 as you have found.
It’s a codec that is fully optimized for use on the MacPro.
If you’re in the pickle that you say you are, re-export the files you were given via Quicktime to a codec that is suited for your G5, e.g. uncompressed 8/10 bit.Chad Brewer

September 11, 2010 at 1:58 amOk well I found a few new things out.
First my clients mac is almost identical to mine and the project plays fine.
So he synced the audio somehow, using a plugin maybe? I am not sure about this.
When I drag the video files from the bin to the timeline they play fine, its just the existing clips that are in the timeline that don’t work. But if I drag the exact same clip in they work. I did have to reconnect all the media when I first got the project. Any other thoughts? Thanks!

September 11, 2010 at 3:14 amDid you move your media, and/or have duplicate clips/clip names?
Start again clean, work carefully.Cheers

September 11, 2010 at 3:18 amWell I did move the media to my computer and I believe we had to move a folder. The problem with starting from scratch is that the total project is about 30 hours of video and it is all synced to different audio, so if I start from scratch I would have to re sync everything and that would just be impossible. Any other options?
I have even thought of moving the project to Premiere on my windows box but the XML file wont transfer. Thoughts? And again I appreciate all the help.

September 11, 2010 at 3:28 amProRes SQ or HQ?
Your external drive is connected with Firewire or USB?
3Gb of ram is a little under.
Your friends version of FCP is?

September 11, 2010 at 3:31 amIts on an internal drive that is just dedicated to video, and I believe his final cut is version 6 as well.
I think the Ram is ok as the files play just fine in quicktime and they play just fine if I drag them to the timeline, its just all the existing work he has done that does not play. Its very strange.

September 11, 2010 at 3:35 amNeither it is on an secondary internal drive, so the drive speed should not be an issue.

September 11, 2010 at 4:01 amHave you run a disk speed test? you can download free speed checking software from Blackmagic or AJA. If your internal is getting full it can slow down.

September 11, 2010 at 4:07 amI have ran a speed test and everything is fine. Also I doubt its hard drive as the files play fine if I re-import them.
