Final Cut vs. Edius
In need some help. My tv station will soon replace our news editing system with Edius. They also want to replace our final cut systems we use for promotions, commercials and long form programs. The final cut users feel the edius system would be a step back (from what we have been able to research) and have been asked to defend that position. I am looking for any suggestions this community has in doing this. Thank you.

If your TV station need only interact within its own walls and never with outside agencies, and someone has determined that Edius has capabilities that exceed FCP for the kinds of things done at your station, then it might be a good move. However, since FCP is so ubiquitous these days, it makes life simple to stick with the system that nearly everyone is using at the moment.
Avoiding Mac purchases might offset the retraining costs involved, however, the station would have to have perpetual training for new employees, as few would come in from outside ready to rumble on Edius. So, your best argument is probably that FCP insures an infinite supply of trained and experienced users to the station ready to step in whenever needed.

I guess my biggest concern is graphics. I have read that the graphics associated with Edius are sub par. If you or others have comments on this I would appreciate any input. It seems to me that for editing only Edius would be quite capable.
As far as training I agree with you. However the company is looking at it another way. Using Edius over several station allows users to come from other stations ready to roll. I must say that I can only remember someone coming from another group station a time or two in the past twenty years. Seems much more likely that you would be correct in that new people would have more ramp up time.

I know very little about Edius, but reading the what’s new in v6, a lot of the functions listed have been in FCP for a while. I think FCP needs work, but it nice to see features being added to other systems that FCP already has.
Timeline features new to Edius:
Drag & drop to change mapping
Track sync on/off
Select multiple tracks and edit on selected tracks only
Nudge clip on timeline (shortcut)
Trim by mouse and keyboard
