Final Cut Upgrade
Question: Is the final cut studio 6 upgrade package, in truth, simply the same as the full retail package version of final cut etc. that simply requires a preexisting serial number to install, or does it actually build on the FP software one already has installed. I ask because I already have FCP already installed but I didn’t to choose to install any of the other applications that come with it to save disk space. Will this effect an upgrade? Thank you.

I think that the most of the pre-existing FC package will be erased. FC6 has many new things respect to FC5.x.
Install the rest of the suit is up to you. But, what you wait to do it? What kind of work you do that you only use FC?Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

It will require a pre-existing serial number along with the new serial number. It is the same software, just different requirements for the install.
Keep in mind that if you do not install the latest versions of the entire studio package, you may have issues if you try to move elements from one software to another. Everything in the entire studio has been updated.

Also, you can install only the applications as those take up very little space. It’s all the ancillary tutorial media and royalty free sound effects that take up a lions share of the FCP install. You can choose not to install all of that stuff and install just the apps. It’s worth it.

Unless you have the drive space. If you have the drive space, it’s totally worth it to have them installed so you don’t have to go to the discs to grab something you want to use. Just MHO.

Agreed, but since he is looking to save disk space by not installing applications…..I think it’s better to install the applications than to load iDVD themes, but that’s MHO.

Oh the humanity!!!
We hear this so often… When 2Gb hard drives cost $2000, that was a time to save disk space. Today it makes no sense. Wasted time is one thing in this lifetime we can never recover.

I think maybe I was not clear in asking my question. I plan to download all of the programs from the new fcp studio. What I have now on my computer is only fcp. I did this because there was not enough room on my disk for all of the other apps, I have sense cleared it. The question I have is, because I only have final cut on my computer now and not any of the other apps, when I upgrade, will the other apps upgrade regardless of the fact they are not now installed on my computer. Thanks again,

During the install, you can select what applications you upgrade. You can also choose not to install certain programs if you want.
I don’t know if applications from different releases will play nicely together, so I wouldn’t try to keep FCP5 but use Compressor 3 or something like that.
