  • Final Cut Pro X project file corrupted – I’ve tried everything

Posted by Tom Wall on March 17, 2015 at 1:23 pm

I finished working on a project last night. This morning Final Cut Pro X crashed whilst loading the project. I tried rebooting but it made no difference. I then looked up advice on various blogs and forums. I move the project file to my desktop and FCPX opened fine. But I need to get the project file working as I’ve spent a long time working on it.

This is what I’ve tried so far:

    1. Moving the backup into the project folder and then loading FCPX. It crashed whilst loading.

    2. Opening the backup from the backup folder. It crashed whilst loading.

    3. Deleting preferences. It crashed whilst loading

    4. Deleting thumbnail and peaks data from the project then loading FCPX. It crashed whilst loading.

I haven’t been able to export the file and then load it in a new library as it crashed FCPX as soon as it opens.

Is there anything else I can try? And what can I do to avoid it happening again?

    Thanks!

    What version of FCPX?

[Tom Wall] “3. Deleting preferences. It crashed whilst loading”

Did you double click the Library again, or did you try and open FCPX itself after deleting prefs? I would try holding option while FCPX loads. This will bring up a dialogue window. Choose to make a new library. Does FCPX open after that?

IF it does, then try loading the library with FCPX open.

    I’m using 10 0 4

I opened FCPX rather than the library after deleting the preferences.

When say double click on the library, what do you mean exactly?

Also, what do you mean by the ‘holding option’?

Could the problem be that I’m using a Mac Mini (not ideal I know – but I have edited other short videos on it)?

    Thanks for your help.

thanks for clarifying. My above advice won’t make any sense, so please disregard.

Move that project out of the Final Cut Projects folder and try to launch FCPX. Does it launch?

Yes that was one of the first things I tried. It works fine when the project file is on my desktop.

I mean FCPX works fine NOT the project.

OK. Now that I know that you are on 10.0.4, that makes sense.

If I remember correctly, and it’s been a while, you have to rename the backup file to “CurrentVersion” from the dated name.

If that doesn’t work, it might be gone. The early days of FCPX were trying times.

and put in the in the Project name folder (the easiest way to do this is to duplicate it in the backup folder, move the dupe to the project folder, and rename.

Yes I tried moving and renaming the backup but that didn’t work either.

Even if I can’t get it back I’d like to know what caused it so I can avoid it happening again.

Might I be placing too many demands on my Mac Mini?

    Thanks.
