Now the untitled folder has increased to 117 GB and I have not been working on the Project

    Ok, that’s a library, not a folder.

My guess is that background rendering is on, final cut is rendering your timeline, and your render cache is in the library, making it larger.

Ok changed that & it looks like that was the problem, but where else and how can I put Render files onto say an external HD.

Not sure what happened but now there is a hidden file somewhere that has taken over 100Gb and it can only be from FCPX … any suggestions

You have to modify the cache settings in fcpx.

Select the Library in the FCPX Browser and Open the inspector. You will see a button
    to modify cache position.

From 2011 till today, whenever a strange file/folder shows up in my system due to ingest from FCPX, I just toss it out.
I rarely use Optimized/Proxies and always use Leave files in place.
However, some odd formats tend to make FCPX act oddly.
I was strictly RED eco for years until this year.
Started getting projects from different cameras.

When I have trouble finding large files or folders I use
OmniDiskSweeper to be able to see all the folders in order of size.

    Very smart for video files.
